Stephanie, thank you for your response; I will reply via email. And, yes, I suspected you didn't mean "tree hugger" offensively, since you followed it with the phrase "the earth as a sacred space" (although likely I would have felt insulted just a few years ago).

Thank you for exploring this subject with us. You've sparked a very valuable discussion.
Blessings.

Todd,

Hello! Thanks for commenting and, like I said to Anon, I apologize for the delay in my response. To answer your question - oh yes!! - I do mention spirituality and/or religion in my informed consent. Since it is probably too lengthy to include in a comment I will write about it next week or you can email me at stephanie@daileys.us and I will be happy to send you some info!

Cheers,

Stephanie

To Anon,

I apologize for the delay in my comments. I read your response and, of course, immediately felt sorry that I had written "tree huggers". Hopefully (as evidenced by the smiley face) you will know that I did not mean this offensively but what about the others out there? That said, this brings about a wonderful point. As a person who does view the earth as a sacred space, I used my own language to define a group of individuals. Honestly, I lovingly call myself a "closet tree hugger" to my friends and family. Whereas I think this is an accurate description of myself, this raises a very important point that using appropriate language that won’t offend is essential. I bet you, even despite my rigorous training and attempts to embrace others worldview, I assumed that because it is not offensive to ME that it wouldn’t be offensive to YOU. Also what I consider to be a tree hugger is going to be very different from what others consider a tree hugger.

Thanks for getting me thinking...you have inspired another blog.

Be well,

Stephanie

I like your suggestion. I created a workbook and put it on a CD data disk. It's about exploring your spirituality. Clients can copy it to a jump drive then bring the jump drive to the counseling session and share their writings with me. Something on paper gives them a starting point and many people these days type on computer instead of writing by hand. I only offer it to clients who have expressed a desire to explore their spiritual self.

Stephanie Dailey wrote: What about the ‘tree huggers’ out there? Have you folks ever felt marginalized or teased because of your belief in the earth as a sacred space?

Well, yes. By you, just now. Thanks for including us, though. :-)

Good post, as well as your previous one. I appreciate you writing on this subject.

Hi Stephanie. I'm an Argosy Schaumburg MACC student. I enjoyed your article and am interested to know what, if anything, do you mention in your informed consent in practice concerning the clients' spirituality/religious situation?

I do agree that everyone has a world view and it is important to know what that is. Good Post
