Brooke:

You and Joan seem very engaged in education and volunteering. I hope your experience can help pave the way for more Counselor Education faculty and students to teach and study abroad.

Also, Kenya is one of the countries on Shoshanna and my list.

Be well,
Shannon Hodges

Cassandra, Thanks for your comments. I find something new each day. The pleasant surprises outnumber the disappointments. I work very hard to not begin sentences with, "In the states we . . . ." I keep thinking that people are doing more with less than any program I might see back home, so perhaps I should be more pleased with what I see and less critical (it's hard to keep the cultural bias out of things).

I also would like to see more international exchange of students and faculty. It is interesting to talk with faculty here who completed their grad work in the U.S. and see how they have turned down jobs in the U.S. which would pay a big bundle to remain here and be underpaid (even by local standards). They love their country!

Good wishes, BC

I just finished reading all of your blog entries and it was a wonderful and bittersweet experience! I am a master's counseling student who had the opportunity through my program to travel to Uganda, twice once in 2011 and again this May, to help teach- counseling students, MH professionals, teachers and nurses - counseling skills. The experience was invaluable, and your blog brought back all of those memories clear as day - from the day to day differences in our lives, to feeling a little discombobulated in a new culture. I am hopeful that other universities will develop programs like this for their students. It would also be great if as professionals we could get back there to help again as well. I can't imagine not going back. Thank you for sharing your story! Safe journey and safe trip home!
